Maynor Shines in Clutch Spots
Researching college play-by-play data uncovers valuable information for agents to use when recruiting players or compiling draft packages.
For example, Eric Maynor has posted unbelievable numbers this season at the end of close games. He not only has shot better with the game on the line, but he values the ball like nobody else. He had committed just 3 turnovers in the last 5 minutes of Virginia Commonwealth’s 12 contests decided by 5 points or less (through February 24). His assist-to-turnover ratio rises to 3.67 in these late-game pressure situations. And he has scored 1.88 points per field goal attempt in these spots (see chart).
Maynor has also increased both his three-point and two-point shooting percentages in close late-game situations, and gotten to the foul line with tremendous frequency (49 free throw attempts). He not only draws the fouls, but nails his free throws late in close games (81.6 percent).
Overall, Maynor has averaged 23.1 points per game and 25.9 points per 40 minutes despite playing for a team that had scored just 73.0 per contest.
Also one of the younger seniors in the 2009 draft, Maynor is younger than some top juniors likely to declare (see section below regarding player age).
The Sports Resource tailors college player recruitment and draft packages that highlight a player’s skills with powerful statistical evidence. You’ll find brief samples of both from last season at www.sportsresource.net/samples.html
MIT Sports Analytics Conference
For the second consecutive year, the upcoming MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference features a tremendous lineup of speakers.
Mark Cuban and Chris Wallace highlight this year’s Basketball Analytics panel. Ray Allen will speak as part of a segment on “The Value of Icon Players.” The conference explores everything from the impact of team chemistry to the use of technology in sports.
The next Sports Resource Newsletter will summarize the items of most importance to sports agents. If agents or their staff choose to attend and would like to meet during this event on Saturday, March 7 in Boston, please contact Steve Fall at steve.fall@sportsresouce.net or 404-447-1861.

Among the Most Important of All Numbers
Last year’s NBA Draft sample on Eric Gordon emphasized the need to incorporate player age when analyzing college statistics (visit www.sportsresource.net/samples.html for this and other brief samples).
Gordon and Russell Westbrook – another player young for his college class last season – have both emerged with superb NBA rookie seasons. This year, sophomores James Harden and Gani Lawal are both younger than many freshmen. And both are putting up impressive numbers.
On the other hand, Pittsburgh’s Sam Young turns 24 before draft night. That makes him older than the Atlanta Hawks entire starting frontcourt of Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Al Horford.
