The Hot Corner and the Free Agent Market

The corner three-pointer is one of the NBA’s most valuable shots, and a great way for teams to gain a competitive edge.

The league shot 39.1 percent on corner threes in 2009-10, versus 34.2 percent on all other three-pointers. That makes the expected return of taking a three from the corner 1.17 points (three points multiplied by the odds of making it). The return on all other threes was just 1.03 points this season. Two-point field goal attempts had an even lower return (.98).

The Orlando Magic took the highest percentage of their total shots from the corner – over 10 percent. Nobody else came close. And the top seven teams in corner three-pointers attempted all made the playoffs.

Among the unrestricted free agents, several stood out in this area. Antoine Wright, Dorell Wright, Luke Ridnour, and Steve Blake all surpassed the 40 percent mark on three-pointers from the corner.

Other free agents fared even better. Jason Williams knocked down 21 of 40 of his corner threes for a phenomenal 52.5 percent. Kyle Korver made an outstanding 33 of 61 (54.1). J.J. Redick, a restricted free agent, went 34-for-61 (55.7) from the corners. But the real star in this area was Mike Miller. He sank an incredible 26 of 43 for 60.5 percent. That is the equivalent of a player making 90.7 percent of his two-point attempts!

A Perfect Fit

Everybody wins when a free agent signs with a team that suits his skills. While nobody knows for certain how a player will fit in until he takes the court with his new team, statistical analysis and other forms of research help predict player performance.

The Sports Resource’s NBA free agency packages not only highlight your player’s statistical achievements, but they can project his impact on select teams.

Our sample on restricted free agent Will Bynum demonstrates how he fills the Indiana Pacers’ current team needs at point guard. It includes a brief needs analysis, and shows how Bynum can make an impact on the Pacers.

Among Bynum’s skills is an uncanny ability to find three-point shooters (see chart below). This would make him a vital addition to the Pacers – a team loaded with strong long-range shooters that still had a mediocre 34.8 three-point field goal percentage this season. Check the sample for further analysis.
