Stepping Up

When the time came for the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, several players increased their rate of goal scoring. The players below stepped up the most in even strength situations (minimum: 500 regular season and 150 postseason even strength minutes).

Ville Leino led the way by scoring seven postseason goals for the Flyers in just 264 even strength minutes.

Pavel Datsyuk not only had the second largest increase, but he topped everybody with 1.78 even strength goals per 60 playoff minutes.

The Sports Resource can analyze any aspect of your player’s game – an invaluable tool for free agency or arbitration. Total Impact Rating

Plus/minus falls short as an evaluation tool for several reasons, mainly because it favors players on good teams. Attempts to improve plus/minus, such as adjusted plus/minus, are better metrics but still not ideal. Total Impact Rating goes further toward determining a player's impact on team performance.

Total Impact Rating (TIR) compares team performance with a skater on the ice versus when he's off in all situations: even strength, penalty killing, and the power play. This metric adjusts for both his team's strength and his time on ice.

The chart below compares two restricted free agents - Eric Fehr and Patric Hornqvist - who had identical plus/minus figures. While both players had a +18 with their teams' at even strength, Fehr should have had a +12.7 figure based on his club's strength and ice time. On the other hand, expectations for Hornqvist were for just a +2.2 because the Predators weren't nearly as good as Washington at even strength.

While Fehr gets 5.3 points for his work at even strength (18 minus 12.7), Hornqvist earns 15.8 (18 minus 2.2). The same process gets followed with power play and penalty kill situations. All three totals get combined before applying a player adjustment. In the end, Hornqvist had a 23.9 TIR versus 8.2 for Fehr.

Total Impact Rating has three key advantages over plus/minus:
1) It adjusts for team strength.
2) It includes power play performance.
3) There is no advantage based on when players see action. For example, plus/minus penalizes players who spend extensive time on the power play (they can accumulate minuses, but not pluses).
